New Telemedicine Clinic Keeps Kids out of the Emergency Room

Chattanooga, TN - Telemedicine offers parents and their pediatricians a new tool to keep children from having to go to the Emergency Room for routine care.  This fall, five telemedicine clinics will open in Hamilton County schools as a result of a partnership between the Pediatric Health Improvement Coalition, Hamilton County Department of Education, and Children’s Hospital at Erlanger.

Trenton is in second grade at Orchard Knob Elementary School.  His mom, Kristeen Brumfield, is a fourth grade teacher at the same school.  If Trenton gets sick she has a hard time leaving her students to take him to the pediatrician...

EDI and the Early Years

EDI and the Early Years

Experience in early childhood impact how the brain develops.  Toxic stress in the first five years results in higher rates of school failure, behavioral problems, obesity, diabetes, and more. But helping children and families early on prevents many of these negative outcomes!! The Early Development Index (EDI) shows us how children are doing across neighborhoods, schools, and cities so we can intervene when we can make a difference!

Build Healthy Places

Build Healthy Places

It takes a community to make a difference for kids. Your neighborhood can support a healthy family or prevent parents from providing a safe and environment for their children. The Early Development Index (EDI) - part of the Transforming Early Childhood Community Systems (TECCS) program - helps map those toxic environments. Read about how a county in Texas is using those results to build a better future for their children!

Summer Safety

Summer Safety

It’s summer time – lazy sunny days full of fun and no school!  But while your child may not have any worries during these months, there are things for you to remember to keep him safe and healthy.

Heat Safety

  • LEAVING KIDS IN YOUR CAR is something that can happen by accident. This is NEVER safe, even for a few minutes.  It can take just 15 minutes for a child in a hot car to suffer life-threatening injuries.  Make sure to always leave your shoe, purse, or cell phone beside the car seat to remind you...

Childhood Obesity

Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity affects many families, but what can be done to stop it?  The Childhood Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) Clinic at the Children’s Hospital at Erlanger is figuring that out.  The clinic works with families to help them learn to make healthy choices.  Small changes are the key to success.  At the clinic, goals are set with the child and family.  These goals are healthy changes the child and family agree to make to make in order to help reverse obesity.

So what small changes can make a difference?  Think 5-2-1-0!

Childhood Anxiety

Childhood Anxiety

“Just calm down!” “Relax!” These are a couple of common phrases often told to people that might be struggling with anxiety.  If only it were that easy!  For a child (or adult) who struggles with anxiety, these phrases can feel pretty frustrating to hear, because if it were that easy they wouldn’t be struggling to begin with.  Anxiety is a very real thing.  And it can manifest in some pretty powerful ways, impacting both mind and body.  So what exactly is anxiety?  How can you identify its presence in a child’s life?  And, what could you do to help? ...

Newborn Vaccines

Newborn Vaccines

The arrival of a newborn brings excitement and wonder.  New parents have many questions about their young infant. The first question I get asked is, "Is my infant healthy?"  While many problems can be detected during a physician's examination in the hospital, there are many medical conditions that do not become evident until days, weeks or even months after a child's birth.  Fortunately, many of these conditions can be treated or managed if detected early.

All infants born in the state of Tennessee are given a test known as the newborn screening test...
