In 2012 a group of concerned physicians and parents of cancer patients met to discuss the fractured pediatric health system in Chattanooga, and the lack of connected resources to get kids the care they need. The Pediatric Health Improvement Coalition for the Tennessee Valley (PHIC) grew out of these discussions. PHIC was founded by Jerry Jensen, the former CEO and President of Siskin Children's Institute; Dr. Alan Kohrt, Pediatric Chair of Children's Hospital at Erlanger; Rick Youngblood, CEO of Blood Assurance; and Scott LeRoy of LeRoy, Hurst, and Cromie. These child-champions recognized the challenges in pediatric health in the Tennessee Valley: disparity in pediatric health outcomes, obesity, asthma, peri-natal health, infant mortality, school readiness, and behavioral health.
In 2014, PHIC partnered with Blue Cottage Consulting to conduct a market assessment and develop a strategic plan. Through partnership building, education, and advocacy PHIC is dedicated to the development of a comprehensive system of care that can improve children's health beyond acute care and improve their opportunity for a healthy life.
